Nembes

NEMBES (Networked and EMBEdded Systems) is an inter-institutional and multi-disciplinary research programme that is funded under HEA PRTLI4 from 01/10/07 to 31/09/11.

Motivation

Embedded systems are a pervasive part of our life – 90% of the world’s microprocessors are embedded – and almost every modern convenience, industry and business would grind to a halt without them. Currently, most embedded microprocessors are isolated from other embedded systems limiting the awareness and influence of individual microprocessors on the systems they control. The next logical step in their evolution is the networking of embedded systems to create an internet of co-operating intelligent objects or the “internet of things” where embedded microprocessors talk to each other sharing real-time information that can help them make better decisions. Just as the internet has transformed our lives beyond recognition, it is anticipated that the internet of things will have the same effect in the coming decades. Three main research strands are investigated within NEMBES: healthcare, transportation and facilities management. We contribute mainly to the transportation strand, and centers around the middleware, programming models and supporting services for computing applications with a special focus on urban smart spaces and intelligent transportation systems.
