Meriel Huggard obtained her primary degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College, Dublin. As an undergraduate she spent a year studying at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Physique de Grenoble in France. She also spent six months working as a petroleumn engineer with B.P. Exploration in Glasgow and London. She joined the applied probability group at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 1995 where she worked on queueing problems associated with ATM networks and operating system schedulers. Some of her time was spent working on the extremely successful ESPRIT long term research contract, MEASURE. During her time in DIAS she lectured to evening students in Trinity College and tutored in management science for the National Distance Education Centre.

She spent one year as a lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences, Dublin City University before joining Trinity College as a lecturer in Computer Science in September 2000.
Her current research interests include:

  • Worst-Case Traffic for fair queueing systems
  • The design of optimal scheduling algorithms for multiple queueing systems
  • Using alternative best effort service in multi-class queueing systems
